I'm Not There, The Movie Soundtrack, Reviewed by Laurence PetersThis is a featured page

I'Not ThereI'm Not There--is more a soundtrack to a movie than it is an album in the classic sense, but I would sooner shell out to pay for the two CD 34 song set than watch the Dylan biopic for which it was created. Why you may ask? Well for a start the movie is pretentious and hard to sit through and the soundtrack album has some good to great covers. For a deeper appreciation of why the movie is so bad--read the excellent review in N+1 by Nickil Saval entitled "Worst Movie of 2007"

Some stand outs include--Jack Elliot's Tom Thumb's Blues for example and Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova--You Ain't Going Nowhere (remember those two from Once -the surprise low budget Oscar winning movie?). Other songs that justify the reasonable $16.99 price Amazon is charging is a haunting Knockin on Heavens Door by Anthony & The Johnsons. But the real gem is the master himself --singing the mysterious unfinished title song--I' m Not There with the Band. Dylan recorded it back when he was in the Basement Tape period but never thought to finish it . It is hard to say what the song is about -- but the emotion that resonates for me seems to be guilt--possibly a guilt for being absent from his lover but shot through the lyric is a clear case of regret mixed with tenderness. The style seems completely new and arresting as if Dylan is again off on another exploration of a new poetic --one that moves the listener into a new interior landscape one capable of seamlessly moving in and out of different time periods . Altogether an exceptional song despite the fact that it is poorly recorded. So my advice is to go out and get the CD but pass on the DVD.
